Aachen (French: Aix-la-Chapelle) is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia (German: Nordrhein-Westfalen), Germany. The city has a population of 258,770.
Aachen has been a spa since at least Roman times (it was known to the Romans as "Aquis-Granum"). In the 8th and early 9th centuries, the town was visited by Frankish kings, Pippin the Younger, and Charlemagne, the latter spending most Winters there between 800 and his death in 814, and then being buried in the city. Between 936 and 1531, most Holy Roman Emperors were crowned "King of the Germans" in Aachen.
